Another Way to Give: How cy pres dollars can help CCLS meet its mission to “Advance Justice and Empower People.”
A “cy pres” award is a distribution of money left over from a class action settlement that is then given to a charitable organization. These funds are available when individual class members fail to claim their portion of the settlement or when it is impractical to distribute very small amounts of money to large numbers of class members. In many circumstances, and under court supervision, these leftover monies can be awarded to non-profits, such as CCLS.
CCLS is a worthy and unique recipient of cy pres funds. We provide free legal assistance to low-income individuals in Fresno, Merced, Tuolumne, Mariposa, Tulare, and Kings Counties. These legal needs include access to basic necessities, healthcare, housing, protecting families and seniors from violence and consumer fraud, and helping veterans overcome barriers to employment.
Please consider CCLS when making your recommendations for cy pres distributions. Contact us directly for information on sample settlement provisions and orders at firstname.lastname@example.org.
CCLS is a non-profit corporation, tax exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. CCLS is funded, in part, by LSC and is restricted from engaging in certain activities. CCLS will spend all funds in accordance with the LSC Action of 1974, as amended, and implementing regulations.
