Veterans' Legal Services Project

Serving those who served

Throughout its history, CCLS has proudly provided free civil legal services to our community’s veterans.  In 2024, CCLS was awarded funding to launch its Veterans’ Legal Services Project (VLSP), with a team dedicated to veterans’ legal needs.  Through the VLSP, eligible veterans receive free civil legal services designed to increase housing stability within our veteran community.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, nine of the top ten unmet needs of veterans experiencing homelessness are legal needs. According to the Legal Services Corporation, approximately 70% of veteran households face at least one civil legal challenge per year. Of those households, 21% face six or more legal challenges.

The VLSP provides comprehensive legal assistance to eligible veterans in  the Central Valley. By offering free legal consulting, advocacy, and representation, we empower veterans to overcome barriers related to housing, benefits, healthcare access, and more. We collaborate with community organizations and volunteers to help eligible veterans receive the care and justice they deserve, fostering stability and a path to a brighter future.

Getting started

  • What Can the VLSP Help You With?

All of CCLS’ legal services are offered to eligible veterans. We provide a range of civil legal services through our Housing, Family Violence, Guardianship, Health, Seniors, and Benefits teams.

In addition, eligible veterans may receive free legal services from volunteer attorneys in specialized areas.

Our VLSP team also connects veterans with community partners who assist with other services, such as discharge upgrades, character of discharge determinations, and service-connected compensation claims.  The VLSP team supports our veterans during these processes.
